Call for Artists - Salmon in the Trees:

The Sitka Summer Music Festival and the Greater Sitka Arts Council are collaborating on the 2nd annual Salmon in the Trees art event.  On June 19th at noon the Sitka Summer Music Festival will hold an outdoor concert in the Sitka National Historical Park to celebrate solstice.  We are seeking artists who are interested in decorating a 32" plywood salmon, both sides.  The fish will then be displayed along the path to the concert site.

The cost of the salmon that goes in the trees is $25.  After the show the salmon will be sold in the Baranof Island Artists Gallery with proceeds benefiting the Greater Sitka Arts Council and the Gallery.  The completed fish is due June 15, 2013.

Greater Sitka Arts Council will host an open house at their new office located in the Yaw building (behind Allen Hall) on the Sheldon Jackson campus - Room 108.

The University of Alaska and the Greater Sitka Arts Council will sponsor a $500 scholarship to a student pursuing the Arts at UAS Campus. Interested applicants do no need to be currently enrolled at UAS to be eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship is to be completed by individuals who plan to continue to enhance their art. This scholarship will apply to all art classes offered for the 2013/2014 academic year at the UAS-Sitka campus.

Interested Applicants: Please submit a 250-word essay explaining your interest and goals in the field of Visual Arts. Include a brief discussion about your participation in the arts and financial need. Also include a letter of recommendation from a former teacher or mentor that is knowledgeable of your interest and involvement in the arts. The Scholarship Application Materials Deadline is Friday, July 12, 2013 and the award will be announced Friday, July 26, 2013.

The Greater Sitka Arts Council has launched a fund raising campaign on IndieGoGo for a melodrama production, Paris of the Pacific.  This is a locally written melodrama about the history of Sitka and the "Big Exchange" from Russia to the U. S.  It's campy and fun and sure to be a big hit with locals and tourist alike.
