The Greater Sitka Arts Council received a small grant through the Reuben E. Crossett Foundation to do a State of the Arts for Youth in Sitka event. Our intent is to gather students and ask them: what is good about the arts in Sitka; what is not so good about the arts in Sitka for youth; and what is one positive, possible, and fun thing that can be done to improve arts for youth in Sitka. To that end we are seeking youth participants of all ages who will work with a youth and an adult facilitator to answer the above questions. The event itself is Saturday April 7^th 10am to 1pm in the Sweetland Hall cafeteria on the Fine Arts Campus, there will be snacks!

The Greater Sitka Arts Council and the Sitka Fine Arts Camp are hosting a series of Art Conversations with local artists. All Sitkans are invited to join these conversations. The second session will present poet, writer, and investigator John Straley and musician and teacher Ted Howard in an evening of discussion and conversation about their philosophy, art experiences along with examples of their work.

The event will take place on the Fine Arts campus in the Rasmuson Building on Wednesday, January 25^th from 7pm to 8:30pm.

We don't usually like to toot our own horn, but we've had a successful year and want to share our accomplishments. During our fiscal year May, 2010 to May, 2011, the Greater Sitka Arts Council sponsored the following activities:

• Community Theater had brilliant productions of a melodrama, The Secret of Yonder Mountain and the play Rumors.  Both were well attended with enthusiastic audiences, and showcased Sitka's great actors, directors and backstage support.
• Sitka Arti Gras celebrated our 4th annual art event with style in March.  The Annual Wearable Art Show included 43 entrants, full of imagination.  Tickets sold out for all shows.  Sitka Arti Gras also included a Gallery Walk with 18 participating shops, the first ever Ode to Sitka Art show, a Singer-Songwriter event and a variety of workshops.
• Youth Art Scholarships - The GSAC provided $1,000 to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp for scholarships.
• The Annual Holiday Craft Fair was held at UAS with the support of GSAC.
• Even more . . . the GSAC assisted with a variety of local arts and educational entities including the Sitka Summer Music Festival, Junior Achievement, Sitka School District, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, Sitka Community Schools, SEARHC, the Boys and Girls Club and facilitated two "Art Conversations" with area arts groups.

More art for Sitka!

• Student art intern program will be funded through grants from the Sitka Charitable Trust.  Two student art interns will each take on a project, one Wearable Arts and one will work on Arti Gras.
• "State of the Arts for Youth in Sitka" conference will be held in November, 2011.  Funding provided by the Rube Crossest Foundation.
• The 5th Annual Arti Gras will include two performances of the Wearable Art Show; we will host Ray Troll for art workshops plus an evening with his band performing original music; Singer-Songwriter showcase; Ode to Sitka Art Show; and the Art Walk and a variety of workshops.
• Community Theater - the 2011 - 2012 schedule includes an October melodrama production, Radio Theater in December or January, and a full stage production in April.

And that's just the beginning.  GSAC will continue to provide scholarship funds for students in the arts, further develop the Greater Sitka Arts Council and strive to expand its role in Sitka.
